Day 13 - a Year by the Sea

samara.jpg
This sorry bedraggled mass of wet vegetation are samaras. Samaras are floral helicopters. These are maple seeds. When they fall from the tree, the winglets twirl and the seeds slowly drift in the wind down to the ground. I’ve never really seen cherry blossoms fall but these are the New England variety and they are a joy to watch whirlagigging down. Usually by now in January, they are all on the ground in heaps but this year some are still clinging on fiercely. We simply haven’t yet had the storms that bring them all down. They are tough and yet if they ever get dry again, they will fly off in the next big wind.

Ciao!
