Day 63 - a Year by the Sea
March 4, 2007 by OrientSee.
It’s a bright day and the redwings are squawking from the trees and reeds. The males are marking their territory with noise. What they are not doing is letting me get close enough to take a picture of their vivid red shoulder patches. I got a suggestion to do it from my car. Apparently, they totally ignore cars which will let me use mine as a picture blind. Today this scenic shot is a reminder of how productive and valuable marshes once were. Marsh grass makes very nutritive hay for livestock. That explains the straight line ditches that define much of the marsh and this old wall where the hay was stored before taken off for use. My guess is that they used boats but it’s possible that wagons were used. Far from being useless trash land, the marsh was an economic asset in an earlier agricultural time.
