Day 74 - a Year by the Sea
March 15, 2007 by OrientSee.
Noisy neighbors. Living next to and underneath the airport means noise. 727, 747, 767 - all kinds of numbered noise. Of course there are sounds from the T Blue Line, trucks, cars and the occasional fog horn from a ship up Chelsea Creek. Urban life means noise. Belle Isle Marsh filters out most of that sound when you are wandering around its edges. Surprisingly, you don’t seem to notice it as much. I’ve heard people in Winthrop half a mile away when things are quiet. All that calm ends when these guys show up. The redwing blackbirds trumpet their presence all day long. It’s no pleasant serenade, especially when you realize it’s all about strutting their maleness and marking territory. They’re not that big but the noise is big because it’s sharp. A 747 is a waterfall of sound. A redwing is a fingernail across the blackboard. Come listen to them and see if you don’t agree.
Ciao!
