Day 122 - a Year by the Sea
May 2, 2007 by OrientSee.
It was overcast today but I started out with high hopes. I got to my first stop, Rosie’s Pool and some one nearby had chosen to start their day with a healthy, enlightening joint. The smell was quite evident. It did seem a little early to need a spleefy. Good news was that the ospreys were back but I don’t think they are sitting on any eggs. They were moving around from platform to the marsh, to the creek and to the poles. Maybe next year. Then I got out to MarshHenge and I saw this. There was a flock of eighteen Glossy Ibis feeding from the pool and the surrounding marsh grass. The overcast day meant that the camera really didn’t pick up the red on their necks and breasts. The snowy egret was tagging along with the rest of the crowd. They got startled and the whole flock took off along with the snowy, a great egret and a great blue heron who were all working the pool out of sight behind the reeds. It was awesome. I got a small dream fulfilled. I finally saw a snipe on the ground before taking off with a loud call. They break cover at the slightest provocation but this one didn’t. His long bill was horizontal and the grass was vertical. The contrast caught my eye and then I realized what I was looking at. Over at the muskrat pond, I saw a green heron. So the day started with a high and stayed that way the whole walk.
