Day 126 - a Year by the Sea
May 6, 2007 by OrientSee.
I’m getting used to the strange looks. An older guy with a camera and binoculars hanging from his neck in bandito fashion walking down the street looking up while wearing knee high rubber boots. Definitely a weirdo. I tell people what I’m doing and their eyes glaze over with the weight of all their boredom. I enjoy looking at birds and nature and taking pictures. Since it doesn’t involve drugs, naked people or lots of money, no one really wants to know. One thing that I really enjoy is MarshHenge. That’s this observation platform at the end of a long dense thicket of sumac, birch and phragmites. It’s a very quiet place just to be at. As a city person, it’s the only place close by where I can enjoy a North Dakota sky. North Dakota is a place where the sky cannot be ignored. The big cathedral above you is always there. Look up and you can zone into a spiritual experience in a minute. You can’t do that in Dorchester where I grew up. I don’t miss winter in North Dakota but the sky and the thunderstorms there are something else. MarshHenge let’s me breathe deep and then I’m in my anchorite chapel at least until a duck splashes down on the pond. That’s another kind of experience.
Ciao!
