Day 155 - a Year by the Sea

ibis_profile.jpg

A gray day and color washes out out of the sky. The profile is Glossy Ibis. You can’t see clearly except at the edges and those are very sharp. Vision is a variable sort of gift. At times, colors can be too rich and not appreciated. Other times, there’s not enough except to tease your eyes as they strain to see more. Add age and glasses, it becomes a very chancy operation to see much of anything. It is still a gift that rewards by constant practice and training. Look and see what there is. Yesterday, I did and found a nesting mockingbird within three feet of myself. I hadn’t seen it until I looked closer and longer. That and another Baltimore Oriole saved yesterday from a dull gray day.

Day 154 - a Year by the Sea

thorny.jpg

Feeling a little hostile towards the world? Want to hurt someone? Then turn into a tree that sports these weapons. These thorns are almost three inches long and very, very sharp. You don’t want to mess with this tree. The problem is why. The tree doesn’t seem to set fruit or nuts. It doesn’t smell good or bad. What is it protecting? Who or what is trying to attack It? Actually, this tree reminds me of many prickly people who most of the time aren’t worth the trouble of getting past their personal thorns. What joy is there in picking thorns out of your own skin? Why are they protecting their boring selves and from whom? I’d rather watch a Baltimore Oriole.

Ciao!
