Day 163 - a Year by the Sea
June 12, 2007 by OrientSee.
As I walked by the Belle Isle Reed cafe at lunchtime, I saw this busy customer eating his special insect delight. Song sparrows tolerate the bipedal crowd fairly well. Earlier just by clearing my throat, a Great Blue Heron took off as if I was brandishing a shotgun. I find it surprising how different the tolerance level is with each species. Mallards are very sensitive while Black Ducks have let me come within 10 feet. Surely hunters shoot Black Ducks as often as Mallards. Of course, Redwing Blackbirds will literally get in your face when scolding you for coming too near. The problem is that it can be hard to identify or photograph without getting a little close. I can’t complain about their survival skills but sometimes it would be nice if they didn’t act like Greta Garbo.
Ciao!
