Day 221 - a Year by the Sea
August 9, 2007 by OrientSee.
This is a Great Egret and it stands nearly four feet tall. The rest of this bird is hidden in a drainage ditch where it is busily hunting. These ditches were dug during the 1920s and 30s to control mosquito populations. Now they are used by all kinds of birds hunting for fish and insects. Some days when there appears to be nothing around, a little patience leads to a glimpse of one bird or another. Sometimes there actually quite a few plodding down the canals like avian gondoliers. In this case, there is a lot more than meets the eye.
Ciao!
