Day 229 - a Year by the Sea
August 17, 2007 by OrientSee.
This is a very secretive bird, an American Bittern, a kind of heron. It is more commonly heard than seen. I was looking across the muskrat pond when I saw a ghostlike bird slither through the phragmites reeds. I blinked and it was gone and then again, it was back. I was perched on a pile of stone and dirt, trying to stand taller in order to see over the tops of the reeds. I was teetering on my toes trying to get a good picture. It was laughable because in my excitement I nearly fell into the mud. I wasn’t squealing with delight but I was close. Something like this makes up for all the boring treks through the thicket and across the marsh grass. Today was a great day.
Ciao!
