Day 254 - a Year by the Sea

There are two parts to a marsh. One is the tides and salt water. The other is this, grass. Actually grasses would be a better term. In a marsh like Belle Isle, there are more kinds of grass than I first ever imagined. The three usual suspects, Spartina alterniflora, Spartina patens and Phragmites are certainly abundant but are not the sole residents. I have no names for them all but look at the landscape and see that all the shades of green are turning to gold and silver with streaks of burgundy and purple. They are all different species and some of them like those in this photo have set their seeds in a show of profound fertility. I look at the monoculture of most lawns and it is dull Then I see the marsh with its diversity and fecund richness. The marsh looks like a jungle in comparison to an ordinary grass lawn. It’s worth taking a closer look some time.
