Day 256 - a Year by the Sea

The marsh is lined with drainage ditches. They were dug to control mosquitoes by eliminating standing pools of water. The ditches are all straight as an arrow and the obvious work of people. The marsh also has natural twisty channels that bend and weave their way through the grass. By the middle of summer, the grasses are tall enough to hide an elephant or a great blue heron. All kinds of surprises lurk down these dark water lanes. Today a black duck was serenely floating along casually feeding. I often feel like that duck when I’m walking out in the marsh and the neighboring thickets. No one is around except for the wind and the stress of the day dissolves quickly. It’s nice to be alone.
