Day 257 - a Year by the Sea
September 15, 2007 by OrientSee.
Today’s surprise visitor was an American Avocet. With the scent of fall heavy in the northwest winds, this lone bird was feeding in a tidal pond at Belle Isle. I’ve never seen one before. This is a very distinctive bird. The long slightly upturned bill reminds me of a fifties cigarette ad with a gorgeously attired woman in satin gloves smoking from a long black cigarette holder. Elegant even if improbable. I certainly don’t miss the fifties of my childhood but that impossible unreal idea of elegance was light years away for a kid from Dorchester. It was an alien vision of another world. I much prefer the simpler natural elegance of a bird like this.
Ciao!
