Day 316 - a Year by the Sea
For a while now I have passed these bright yellow berries and hardly looked. Today I looked and the berries have shed their yellow skins to reveal the brilliant red below. It was a small revelation and wholly unexpected. It is a vine commonly called bittersweet which is an invasive species that tries to take over everything it can overwhelm. The thicket was busy in total contrast to yesterday. There were robins, starlings, redwing blackbirds, downy woodpeckers, chickadees, a redtail hawk and a loud pheasant. There was more to be found out beyond the bushes, a shrike and a bittern. It was quite a surprise because today was cloudy and raw while yesterday was bright and sunny. I had not expected to see much and yet there was a rich diversity to savor. Cold and gray but the day was fun for walking.
Ciao!
