Usually the middle of the day means that there isn’t much activity out in the marsh. At first that seemed to be true today until I caught sight of this Downy Woodpecker which was a surprise. Then the pheasant kicked up a racket. Something must have set him off. It seems a little early for his courtship calling to start. Next the Cooper’s Hawk settled down nearby as he rested his from his hunting. Finally the creek seemed to be crawling with ducks and geese. So it was not a dull day after all. I’m curious about tomorrow. We are getting our first real cold spell, possible single digit temperatures at dawn and very strong northwest winds. I’ll dress for it but I wonder about the marsh inhabitants. Will there be any signs of life at all? Of course there’ll be ice everywhere which means that everything will hear me coming as I break through the brittle ice that will be covering the paths. I hope to be proven wrong.

Ciao!
