January 6

Common Eider. This large duck feeds on shellfish and seldom ventures into the Belle Isle Creek. This particular bird was paddling around inside the Saratoga St. bridge which is unusual but there are obvious mussel beds there that can be seen at low tide. The Eider mostly feed in large groups off Deer Island and not here. They are fun to watch as you can often see them as they swim underwater. At first I though that this one was a large fish and then he surfaced and revealed himself in all his splendid duckiness. It’s still quite warm and not much like our ordinary very cold January. That’s good for my heating bill but bad for exploring the little duck ponds. The ponds need to be hard frozen or else the trip can be a nightmare in muck and reeds. I’m hoping for some more cold weather soon.
Ciao!
