January 8

I nearly stumbled upon this Great Blue Heron. It was asleep with its head tucked under a wing. It didn’t react to me at all until the lens snapped. Then its head popped up and it focused on me. I froze and waited a bit. I snapped off a few more shots. Then in disgust it rose up and took off with a larger companion that I hadn’t even seen at all. I tried for a few takeoff shots but I was a little flustered and botched them. These herons are generally the largest birds that you see at Belle Isle. No turkeys or bald eagles. There have been reports of swans occasionally in the creek on the Revere sight but these herons are the resident giants. Today was quite an experience.
Ciao!
