June 2

mallardducklings.jpg

Oooo! The Mallard family out for a swim in the Muskrat Pond. Today was a great day, bright, clear and warm. The Osprey are still on the platform above the south flats. I immediately noticed the first dragonflies of the summer. Of course, none stopped and posed. We’re having some astronomical high tides the next few nights which means that anything that floats, moves across the flats including spherical channel markers. Three Snowy Egrets and 1 Great Egret  were picking over the ponds and puddles. The high tide strands small fish in the wet spots which means easy pickings for the herons. A small flock of Black Bellied Plover were out beyond the Boardwalk but just barely visible through my binoculars. A Kestrel was hunting over the park while a Bobolink was doing his thing in the high grass.  A number of fast moving warblers were tantalizing me out by the park entrance. They simply would not stand still long enough to see what they were. A very good day indeed even if there weren’t any Orioles to see.

Ciao!
